Folio 81. To [Montague]. Concerned about his immediate future now that his employment in Saxony is actually at an end. Recipient will, before this letter reaches him, have seen Mr [Heneage] Montague and had 'leisure to discourse with him how things go in this end of the world'. As Blathwayt intimates, it may not be too late for him to go to Vienna if Lexington will have him at his side. But if this should come to naught and the King be not willing to employ him at Berlin or Ratisbon, 'I see no remedy but going home & living upon my own hands, for I am in no prospect of any settlement, which is a little hard after 9 years service ...'. Has written to secretary [Sir William] Trumbull and under-secretary [John] Ellis. Begs the 'concurrance' of recipient's 'powerfull good offices'. Holograph, on small quarto paper, inscribed: 'This letter was never sent'.
