Description

Folio 80. To [?Blathwayt]. [Recipient not given]. Finds himself out of a job. Has nothing more to do in Dresden, now that the elector has left. Besides, the grand marshal [Haugwitz] has sent him his recredentials [copy enclosed -Not entered here] 'with a clause Ipso sic cupiente [Underlined, Ms] (for fashion sake) for I never desired it'. To return home without at least the prospect of employment 'will look very much like a disgrace in the eye of the world' which he has not deserved. Would not like to serve anywhere for less than three months. Compares himself with Rycaut, Cresset, Robinson and [Robert] Wolseley who are all safe at their stations. Considers, at some length, three possible openings: Berlin, where he might be along with, or under, Ham, who has 'too firm root ... and is so constant in his correspondence with lord Portland that he will not bear any assistant for the King's business, nor indeed do I desire to be employ'd with him, for he is such an uneven spirit that it is impossible to agree with him ...'; Ratisbon [not elaborated, see descriptive note below]; and at Vienna, as an 'underpuller' to Lexington. Friesen will have ousted ['outed', Ms] him at Cassel, '& it is likely if the circles of Swabia and Franconia are to be admitted into the Gr: allyance he may have that job added to his commission because of his post with prince Lewis who is in effect the director of these circles though he does not bear the name'. [Fragment, scored through].
