Folio 76. To Blathwayt. Acknowledges 'papers' of Aug 23/Sept 2, 25/Sept 4 and 26/Sept 5 giving an account of the march but still has no notice of whether Lexington has left the army and he is to meet him at Celle. Harrach arrived on Aug 25/Sept 4 and had his first audience of the elector the next day. [Samuel] Chwalkowski [von Chwalkowo] has come from Brandenburg, 'but without a character'. He told him, Stepney, his errand was 'to know positively what the elector designs to do in the affaire of the 9th electorate in favour of Hanover' which the elector of Brandenburg thinks 'is too tedious, & as he has hitherto promoted that interest with great warmth and zeal he is willing to see it made an end of before wee think of peace'. Remembers that this was Grote's principle while he was at Vienna, that the introduction [to the electoral college] should be perfected before the end of the war, 'so that France may have no opportunity to hinder it nor any merit in promoting it'. Should he be sent to Ratisbon, he asks for instructions how to 'behave' himself: should he remain silent and just listen to what others say, or try to promote 'underhand advance [of] the King's business'. Refers to his letter to Limbach (see f. 71, ante) to which he has received a reply a copy of which he encloses [Not entered here]. Haxthausen, the Dane, who should have left the day before but was, upon Chwalkowski's arrival, taken with a maladie de commande, has postponed his departure, 'perhaps out of a design to hear what answer the elector gives in the point of the 9th electorate'. The elector has now appointed part of the corps of court officials of medium rank under the grand marshal count [Friedrich August] Haugwitz. Gives a list of them, among them baron [von] Eck and Hungersbach who is chief cupbearer, Haugwitz is to act as privy purse. The gentlemen-in-waiting are to serve under [Christian August von] Haxthausen, the privy councillor.
