Description

Folio 75. To [Charles] Montague. Acknowledges letter of Aug 7 [i.e. 7/17] and is 'highly satisfied' with recipient's approval of his 'choice' to stay some time longer. Would have followed his and Vernon's advice about 'fixing his station' at Ratisbon before visiting Blathwayt, but has by last post received Blathwayt's orders to keep himself ready to meet Lexington at Celle 'at an hour's warning'. He is to assure the elector of his speedy return [to Dresden] either after waiting upon the King at Loo or after [return from] his visit to England 'as your inclinations shall lead you or the King's service permitt [Emphasis in Ms]. Encloses an extract of his reply [to Blathwayt - Not copied here]. Supposes there will be no 'chasma' in his allowance during his stay in England. Should he go to Celle and Loo, he will advise Heneage Montague to stay at Dresden until the latter knows whether or not he, Stepney, is going to England. If he does go, Heneage may spend a month or two at Vienna where Lexington may look after him, and thereafter join him at Ratisbon or go to Vienna for the carnival. Thanks him for his interceding with the master [of Trinity college, Cambridge]. Now that all applications are too late, he is 'not much disappointed' because he expected what has happened.
