Folio 72v. To Blathwayt. Acknowledges 'news' of Aug 16, 19, 20 and a letter of Aug 19 [s.v.]. Ham and he continue their absolute reserve towards Schöning. Count [Sayn-]Wittgenstein had an express from Hanover the day before and this morning an audience of the elector 'in which (he tells me) he made long contestations' in his master's name, how willing he is to cultivate his friendship by doing all that cou'd be desired of him, but that he protested he knows not what was become of the person for whom applications were made & to the question whether he was alive or dead, since after the best enquiry ... they were able to make no true discovery, which left a very strong suspicion that he is rather dead than living'. The elector of Saxony 'seem'd very moderate after this answer as if he doubted not the truth of what had been offred ...'. However, he requested of the elector of Hanover to be kept informed about developments. Concludes: 'I beleive here that affaire will end, without causing any breach betwixt the 2 electors'. Countess Königsmarck has left. Will, as commanded by recipient, keep himself in readiness to go to Celle where he will be halfway to Loo, hoping to be seen there by the King and his 'patron' [i.e. Blathwayt]. Has told Gersdorff that he will leave a representative to deal, in his absence, with the instruments of ratification. His leave in England would mean 'no abatement in my ordinary establishment'. Ham has made presents [to the Saxon ministers and others] and he, Stepney, hopes to have his ready 'in a post or two'. Asks him to remind the lords of the treasury that the beginning of Oct is the term for the payment of 33,333 rixdollars, the remaining portion of the English subsidy for this year. 'Young count Harrach' is expected at Dresden daily. Boineburg has gone to Mainz to assist at the election of a coadjutor to the elector.
