Folio 47. To Portland. Acknowledges letter of July 12/22 from Roosbeck. Refers to what recipient must undoubtedly know from Ham about him, Stepney, and explains the untenability of his position as an 'amphibious creature', i.e. without title, character and adequate allowance, if upon the successful conclusion of his business, he is to stay at Dresden, which is an 'extravagant post'. His hopes of returning to Vienna or a transfer to courts of [Brunswick]-Lüneburg were dashed by the appointments of Lexington to Vienna and of Cresset to Hanover. Sees 'no sphere in Germany' where he can 'act in' unless it be 'to run as a Mercury betwixt the two houses of Saxony and Brandenburg', in which case a character will be necessary, or to 'fix at Ratisbon as soon as they begin to talk in earnest of peace'. He has in eight years of foreign service been unable to add anything to his small fortune which made him consider soliciting some moderate settlement at home where he has 'almost grown a stranger'. All of which has led him to asking Blathwayt to enable him to report to the King in Flanders. Is now waiting for an answer and meanwhile recommends himself to Portland's patronage.
