Description

Folio 44. To Dr [John] Montague, master of Trinity college, Cambridge. Gives an account of his mission to the electoral court of Saxony and its accomplishment. Describes, in some detail, the bigamous living of the late elector and its uncanny and bizarre end down to the disinterment of the body of the late countess Rochlitz at Freiberg and re-burial in 'another grave more suitable to her birth' and the prosecution of her mother for practising witchcraft. Asks him to consider his, Stepney's, admission to the law fellowship at the college vacant by the death of [James] Linfield [M.A.. Fellow from 1674] who as he gathers from letters received this morning from Whitehall, 'has been barbarously used on the road'. Has 'no inclination either for matrimony or holy orders'. Is less out for profit than for 'otium cum dignitate'. Requests that any reply be directed to be left at the 'Black Boy near Whitehall'

Note
Centre portion [hand of Plantamour]. Heading and date in Stepney's hand. John Montague (?1655-1728), divine, the son of Edward Montague, first earl of Sandwich, was master of Trinity college, Cambridge, 1683-1699, vice-chancellor from 1687, and dean of Durham from 1699.
