Description

Folio 35. To Cresset. Encloses copy of his [last] letter to Blathwayt (see f.33v, ante). Refers to a 'very obliging letter' he has had from Shrewsbury. If, as it looks, he is to stay 'in these parts' longer than he either expected or wished, 'I thank my starrs that this elector and I understand one another better than the last and I did, so my life may be as easy as I can reasonably desire'. Looks forward to a possible trip to Hanover. Ham is soon to go to Berlin There is no mystery about Bielke's journey thither: it was to 'settle a good correspondence' between the king of Sweden and the elector of Brandenburg which had been interrupted for three years. The reasons were: the countess of Dohna's change of religion [This reference is unclear. In stead of giving a brief explanation, Stepney says 'which is a known story at least to relate now'] and the differences about Damm and Gollnau which should be restored to Sweden by virtue of art.8 of the peace of Nimeguen. If the elector of Saxony has an interview with that of Brandenburg, he, Stepney will accompany him. Du Cros has 'really been sick & is in danger of being cutt for the stone'. Is sorry to hear that Stomer has 'abused' Cresset's kindness, the more so since it was he, Stepney, who had warmly recommended him.
