Folio 32. To Stratford. Thanks him for two letters, of June 16 and 23 [s.v.] respectively and his good offices on his behalf, with van Leeuwen vis-à-vis Portland whose promises or expressions at least 'were very much a courtier's way of dealing. But at the bottom I must assure you he is the man who has hindered me, not so much out of ill will towards me, as ['&', Ms] of favour to Ham and Keppell. Mr Blathwayt does as good as tell me so; but wee are not allow'd to speak our minds'. Ham 'shuffles and cutts' and is not yet resolved what 'presents' to give and 'in what species, gold or silver'. He Stepney, will ask Jäger for 12,000 rixdollars in eight days and will send recipient an acquittance as soon as he will agree with Ham on the sum to be used. Will have to retain Colt's two 'copy books' and other copies of his letters [sent him through Stratford] for some time longer.
