Folio 24v. P.S. à Mr Blathwayt'. This PS which obviously followed Stepney's letter to Blathwayt of June 15/25, see f.26, infra, is in favour of an Irish officer, Mr Nugent, who was a major in the Irish regiment in Hungary and was, on its being re-formed, promoted lt-col and desires a post in that rank in the English forces in Flanders. He has a letter of recommendation from the prince [i.e. landgrave] of Hessen-Darmstadt to Stepney, the duke of Ormond and general Talmash, and one from [the earl of] Carlingford to the count of Athlone and the duke of Ormond, which he thinks sufficient to get him the rank in the King's army which he wishes to join poste-haste. Stepney advised him to go to Prague and await developments whilst his testimonials, endorsed by Stepney, are being considered. Is peeved about Ham's being sent to Berlin to present to the elector of Brandenburg 'some noble peices of plate, as cisterns, basons, etc' as a gift from the King.
