Munitions of War and Munition Tribunals MT MW MWCE MWLS

The Munitions Tribunals files contain correspondence concerning the appointment of the tribunals and appeals against their decisions and cover the period 1916-1920.

The few MW files in this series deal with Orders under the Munitions of War Act, 1915, and rules for controlled establishments, also with the setting up of Munitions Tribunals, their staffing and finance. The files cover 1915-1916.

There are also sixteen MWCE files which deal with controlled establishments, and two MWLS files of the Labour Supply department which deal with training of munition workers and the post-war use of training centres.

The Munitions of War, MW, series was begun in 1915 for records dealing with labour. These files were taken over from the Ministry of Munitions.

Munitions Tribunals: There were two kinds of tribunals, both set up under the Munitions of War Act, 1915. The General Munitions Tribunals dealt with the more serious offences such as taking part in illegal strikes or lockouts; and Local Munitions Tribunals dealt with minor cases such as breach of discipline in controlled establishments. The section of the Ministry of Munitions dealing with Munitions Tribunals was transferred to the Ministry of Labour and merged with the Solicitor's Department when that department was formed in December 1918. Later the tribunals dealt with cases under the Wages (Temporary Regulation) Act and the Restoration of Pre-War Practices Act.
