The ML series contains files of the Ministry of Labour, of the work done at the headquarters of the Ministry which did not fall into other file series.
The files contain papers on the organisation of the Ministry, its work during the first months, and its relations with other departments, in particular with the Ministry of Reconstruction. There are also files on labour problems, setting up of JICs and IIRCs, unrest, correspondence with the Trades Union Congress and unions. There are papers on two bills, Billeting of Civilians and Trade Unions (Amalgamated). There are a few files on finding work for the disabled, emigration, and position of apprentices called up for military service. All files are dated 1917 except one which contains a letter from the Amalgamated Society of Watermen dated 1916. Later files dealing with these subjects will be found in HQ, LAB 7/113-118.
There are three files with a coding MH Estab., this probably stands for Montagu House, the head office of the Ministry, and the files should be in the Establishment series. They deal with the Investigation Staff of the Wages and Arbitration Department, dated 1918, the files numbers are MH Estab. 1012/2, 3, and 5, and they can be found in LAB 2/1779.
