Administrative / biographical background

This department was formed in April 1918, by the amalgamation of the Officers' University and Technical Training Classes, set up by the Ministry of Munitions to train convalescent officers, and the Professional and Business Register of the Employment Department of the Ministry of Labour. It continued until 1925, and from 1920 to 1925 was merged with the Civil Liabilities Department.

The Department dealt with the resettlement of ex-officers and other ranks and civilians with similar educational, professional, or commercial qualifications or attainments. Later it administered the scheme to provide opportunities for higher education and training to replenish losses caused by the war. The department was responsible for training in offices and works; the Board of Education and the Ministry of Agriculture were responsible for other courses. All applications were made to the Appointments Department.

From November 1918, to June 1919, the Appointments Department was part of the Civil Demobilisation and Resettlement Department, and records for this period are in the DRA, DRAX, and DRAY series, LAB 7/26-28.
