Description

Folio 100: Carteret to Wich. Most secret. Our reports from France and other places say that France is still hoping to prevail on Czarina to except France from the Casu Foederis in her alliance with us. For this and all other misrepresentations they depend on Lestock and Brummer to inform the Czarina. We believe Lestock still receives a pension from France, as does Princess Dolforukov and they hope to engage Madame Romanzov for the same purpose. We fear Lestock betrays what passes between you and him to D'Alion for it is known in France that we offered him a pension but not if he accepted it. He drew up the answer with the Czarina concerning the accession to the Treaty of Breslau. It is hinted in France that the Czarina will not contract an alliance at all with England and we will prevail on her ro recede from the one she has with Queen of Hungary. Brummer enthusiastically agreed with all these views. Lestock has assured D'Alion from the Czarina that the English will have no part in the pacification of the North and that if the Bishop of Lubeck succeeds he will have no connection with us. Duke of Deux Ponts their choice or Duke of Holstein's refusal in order to upset Czarina's intention for Bishop of Lubeck. Afterwards French party in Sweden will pretend they were neutral although it it notorious at Stockholm that French Ambassador is conducting everything under-hand and supporting it with vast sums of money from France. Dated Whitehall, 17 Dec 1742.
