Description

Folio 79: Carteret to Wich. News of unfortunate death of Prince Cerkasskoi. Impatient to know by whom he is succeeded as much depends on that choice. French labouring at Russian court to espouse Czarina from her scheme in favour of Bishop of Lubeck. They want to get Duke of Deux Ponts elected and marry him to a Danish princess, by which they reckon they will be masters of affairs of the North. If this fails they will join a plan to elect a Prince of Denmark if Denmark will assist Sweden to regain her lost provinces from the Czarina. The French will oppose any change in the form of Government in Sweden if the Administrator is elected. Dated Whitehall, 10 Dec 1742.
