Folio 69: Wich to Carteret. Newcastle sent via Weston a paper containing Wasenburg's address at his audience and what HM declared to him about his compliance to the request made by Sweden. Soon will know if Czarina requires same mediation with `good offices' which are the words used by Wasenburg, and which this court may agree to since refusal of French and Danish mediation, if Czarina wishes to go ahead with negotiation with Sweden. I presume I may accept it under `good offices' in HM's name, contacting Guy Dickens who has your orders at Stockholm. Great opposition will be met from partizans of France. Wish Great Chancellor in better health; think must wait for his recovery, Bestuzev equally well-intentioned but not carrying the same weight. Buchwald the Holstein minister, has gone with Czarina's picture in a fine diamond frame and studded gold snuff box for the Duke. Dated Moscow, 4 Nov 1742.
