Description

Folio 65: Carteret to Wich. Favourable provisional answer relating to Bishop of Lubeck [Duke Administrator of Holstein] returned to Naryskin. HM will explain himself more fully when Buchwald arrives with Czarina's whole scheme. As Czarina's emissary he will haveevery facility. Secret of these negotiations being so ill kept, probably the intrigue of Brummer and Lestock with D'Alion. Continue to raise hopes of Russian court preventing them from entering into any confidences with France, and exhort them to keep deputies from Sweden, and D'Alion, in suspense about Czarina's resolve concerning [young] Duke of Holstein until the matter is settled. If French Ambassador at Stockholm or Swedes in his party, obtain authentic knowledge of the intention to turn down the [young] Duke's succession to Sweden. They would be at an advantage and proceed to elect the Duke of Deux Ponts, who is too devoted to France for HM's or Czarina's interests. Secret information gleaned from France about Czarina's aversion to England. Cerkasskoi blamed by France for Russian disinclination towards her. Very necessary for you to be careful in cultivating his good feelings to us. Dated Whitehall, 30 Nov 1742.
