Description

Folio 52: Carteret to Wich. Lanmary the French Ambassador in Stockholm sent news to Czarina of fruitless French attempts to obtain election to succession to throne of Sweden for young Duke of Holstein, to persuade her of the zeal of French court in trying to contribute to her nephews election. This is a misrepresentation; they never acted on his behalf but hoped to secure the second votes of the Holstein's for the Duke de Deux Ponts. Acquaint Bestuzev with report of forged documents being sent to Czarina about him and the ruin of the Dolgorukov's. HM has ordered his troops numbering 38,000 men to march immediately into Germany to act as auxiliaries to Queen of Hungary. Account of condition of French armies. Hopes of States General joining HM in supporting Queen of Hungary. Defensive Alliance between HM and King of Prussia signed. Dated Whitehall, 23 Nov 1742.
