Folio 48: Wich to Carteret. Czarina resolved to proceed, in manner reported, in the succession of Duke Administrator of Holstein to throne of Sweden. Orders sent to Naryskin to sound HM's ministers on HM's views in this matter, before arrival of Buchwald in London. If he succeeds in obtaining HM's agreement he will go to Stockholm and then act together with Guy Dickens to HM's advantage. His views will condition success of our treaty. It is necessary to regulate the matter as if Russia desired it and not England. We want to flatter Czarina and give her an occasion to show our friendship as against that of France. On the court returning to St Petersburg the young Duke of Holstein will be declared successor to Russian Empire and embrace the Greek religion in which he has for some time been instructed. Dated Moscow, 30 Oct 1742.
