Folio 43: Wich to Carteret. Visited Great Chancellor to acquaint him of my being able to conclude the treaty with such of Czarina's ministers as she would authorize, but found him too weak to see anyone. Vice-Chancellor promised to inform Czarina. I fear delays because of great Chancellor's health. If he dies or is impelled to retire foreign affairs which are solely managed by him will take time to be re-ordered. Report of dispatches of importance arrived or expected from Stockholm. Shall send any further news when available. PS. Original letter from Cardinal Fleury seen dated Issy 6 Oct to Czarina. He says King of France ordered de la Chetardie to return to this court. However, agreeable this is to Czarina, de la Chetardie cannot be ignorant of how he is hated here. Will no doubt excuse his return to this country which he quitted with so much advantage, and not expose himself to the dangers liable at a second appearance. Dated Moscow, 28 Oct 1742.
