Description

Folio 33: Carteret to Wich. More secret advices. French trying to agitate Porte against Russia to procure diversion to help Sweden, if peace negotiations should fail. The French pretend Czarina wants de la Chetardie returned hoping to obtain admittance into negotiations with Sweden. Versailles beginning to doubt Lestock, imagining he is concealing true facts about Bishop of Lubeck [Administrator] for whom Czarina planned to demand a Princess of Denmark, with Duchy of Sleswig in her dowry, and if that failed an English Princess. Either way Czarina wishes to get him [Administrator] elected King of Sweden, declare Duke of Holstein successor to Russia and Grand Duke of Finland and marry him to a daughter of hers by a Knez [Prince] of Russi. This is alleged to be a plan projected by you, Buchwald and your son-in-law Holmer. D'Alion has orders to prevent this. Buchwald should go to Stockholm as Czarina's private agent and solicit financial demands of Duke [Administrator] of Holstein. HM however, continues in favour of Prince William of Hesse [Kassel]. Brummer and Lestock still serving the French and are arousing suspicions of Czarina regarding Breslau since they say it covers the whole Brunswick family, the erstwhile Regent of Russia, her husband and son. French also hope Czarina will exclude from the Defensive Alliance with us, any Russian liability if France attacks England-Hanover in return for exempting England from obligations if Turkey attacks Russia. HM hopes this will not happen. English and Russia on point of signing Defensive Alliance. Regarding impending Russian-Prussian treaty deplore Prussian guarantee of Russian gains in Sweden; You are to persuade Czarina to guarantee part of Silesia to Queen of Hungary at the same time as she guarantees the other part to King of Prussia.
