Description

Folio 56: Carteret to Wich. HM awaits proposals from Russia concerning Defensive Alliance. Secret communications for Czarina with absolute insistance that information has not come from HM First the Porte has been induced by French Ambassador there to grant to Sweden 250,000 piastres to enable her to carry on War with Russia and Count de Castellane has the money already in his hand, for remitting to Stockholm. Secondly, the new Grand Vizir says he is anxious to assist Sweden by a diversion and intends to attack Russian frontier and is looking for reasonable pretences to justify such an invasion, intending so he says to restore the conquered provinces to Sweden, and will not end the war until he has made the Czarina do so. Indexed. HM Thinks this information of utmost importance to Czarina and in deference to their friendship discloses it immediately, insisting only that the source should never be known. Dated Whitehall, 31 Aug 1742.
