Description

Folio 193: Wich to Carteret. Reports on conspiracies f.191, true, designed to kill Czarina, Duke of Holstein and all foreign ministers. Plot discovered night before it was to be put into practice and since then more than 100 persons have been put into custody. Nothing known of the chief instigator but particulars will be sent as revealed. Czarina convinced that she does not reign so absolutely in the hearts of her subjects as she imagined and will not be induced to return more hastily to St Petersburg. Here she is in more danger as was her father Peter the first, who hated this city after narrowly escaping murder here. Gathering of troops f.182 now accomplished on borders of Courland. General Butterlin commanding. King of Prussia will certainly be annoyed and demand explanations from this court and the answer will increase his unease; Czarina may easily be prevailed upon to curb the limits of that Prince. Next post will provide you with intentions of Czarina regarding our treaty. Letters from Nolken to Prince Cerkaskoi are believed to contain overtures of Peace, conjected by sudden departure of General Rumancou Alexander Ivanocis Romanzov (previously Russian ambassador to Constantinople) for Finland, thought to be not needed with army but to have full powers to treat with Swedish Plenipotentiaries if they will treat on footing of Uti Possedetis and the treaty of Nystadt without mediation. Swedes unable to act offensively with only 1000 men in Fredrickshan. Persian Ambassador took public audience of leave. Dated Moscow, 21 June 1742.
