Description

Folio 182: Wich to Carteret. As in F.177 the vice Chancellor informed Czarina of contents of HM's letter and later she assured me of her thankfulness to him for his secret report. Same intelligence sent to Czarina by Keyserling in Dresden, communicated by King ofPoland somewhat alarmed by a scheme to raise a Confederation in Poland, which may end in favour of King Stanislaus. Being imparted by Czarina's own minister this has made deeper impression although advices confirmed each other. Orders to assemble 15,000 to 16,000 troops on borders of Courland will prevent plans of the Swedes and at the same time annoy King of Prussia whose dominions lie quite open on that side. These troops are to be commanded by General Buttalin and augmented if Swedes content themselves to act in Finland only. If they appear to move troops to Livonia it is to be hoped that Field Marshal Prince of Hesse Homburg will command Russian army on that side and encourage Czarina in matters advantageous to Queen of Hungary. General Botta received an account from Vienna of the battle in Bohemia between Austrian and Prussian troops. Much different from exaggerated reports from Prussians and their partizans. Difficult to induce Czarina to declare herself and side with Queen of Hungary. Papers found amongst possessions of Princess of Brunswick and count Osterman hurtful to House of Austria and piqued present Czarina. Dangerous to put anything in writing to anyone at this court. Continuing to make advances to Lestock who appears to try extracting himself from de la Chetardie's influence. Dated Moscow, 14 June 1742.
