Folio 150: Wich to Carteret. Great Chancellor Prince Cerkasskoi received me with great civility. Thereafter visited all foreign ministers here who returned my visit the following day. de la Chetardie not at home and I had gone out when he visited me. Vice Chancellor Count Bestuzev invited me to visit him last Wednesday and announced a private audience with Czarina next morning. Language to be used discussed and French agreed for both compliment and answer. Account of reception and audience. Usual method of practice for private audiences here and at French court for minister plenipotentiaries, even to kissing hands. Dined last Friday with Duke of Holstein, General Botta minister to Queen of Hungary knowing etiquette of this court informs me that this civility is a mark of distinction. Description of Moscow and cost of living. Dated Moscow, 24 May 1742.
