Folio 136: Carteret to Wich. Reports from Vienna that Russia is inclined to assist Queen of Hungary, and HM has news from several places of the decline of credit of de la Chetardie in Moscow. Czarina no longer amused by his professions of French friendship regarding her dispute with Sweden. HM wishes for authentic confirmation of this. Also HM knows of Lestock's influence on the Czarina and as he was born a subject of HM as Elector, sound him out whether in view of his origins he is willing to owe HM an obligation, for which you are authorised to promise him a pension the same orders regarding the Bestuzevs. HM has high regard for both and would give proof of it to them. The co-operation vital to promote union between Maritime Powers and Russia conformable to essential interest of Russia. Dated Whitehall, 8 June 1742.
