Folio 113: Wich to Carteret. From my letters it will be obvious how this court stands with Sweden. Nolken will find it difficult to conclude an accommodation unless on the grounds of UTI POSSIDETES, and then with no mediation. He has gone to Moscow but will be unable to begin any negotiation before the coronation. Manifest from Czarina distributed to inhabitants of Finland, suggesting they withdraw their allegiance from Sweden and set up new form of government themselves. In this way Finland might form a barrier between Russia and Sweden. If inhabitants agreee Czarina will assist that establishment if not Czarina will destroy whole province. Duke of Holstein is recovering from measles. It is to be wished that all those bound to assist Queen of Hungary would support her as much as we do, for as long as war continues with Sweden she can expect nothing from Russia and must stop Czarina from making a new treaty to avoid execution of former pledges in favour of Austria. English merchants here have agreeable reports from agents at Resht that trade will prove very advantageous to HM It would be great favour for information to be sent about intentions of Russia in adhering to treaty. Dated St Petersburg, 17 April 1742.
