Folio 97: Wich to Carteret. My presence in Moscow might be useful to HM's interest. de la Chetardie's credit diminishes and Czarina percieves France's designs and tries to retrieve herself from French patronage. Swedish proposals regarding the cession of Kexholmand Vyborg and payment of 3 million roubles towards war expenses disdainfully rejected by Czarina and the prolongation of the truce refused. Nolken dispatched from Stockholm and has reached Friedrickham in Finland presumably en route to Moscow with new proposals. No negotiations feasible unless on the basis of the treaty of Nystadt and with no French mediation as acceptable to Czarina. Pleasure here as resolution of Holland to send 9 small men-of-war to protect her subjects trading to Russian ports. A convoy should be sent for our Russia merchant too. Trade here of greater importance since was with Spain. Treatment by persons of quality towards me most civil. Czarina plans to visit monastery at Kiev 700 miles from Moscow after her coronation. Doubtful she will return here before October. Dated St Petersburg, 3 April 1742.
