Folio 89: Carteret to Wich. HM expects full information after such a long interruption. Concerning Court and Country, particulars of war with Sweden and Czarina's inclinations and her minister's towards peace with Sweden, generally in Europe, and especially towards HM France and Queen of Hungary. Some news lately here that de la Chetardie's credit declining and that Czarina giving pecuniary help to House of Austria or sending troops. HM impatient to have confirmed these facts gleaned from different parts. Your instructions are to induce Russia to declare in favour of Queen of Hungary, and you will inform me how they are disposed and if willing to engage on that side, in what manner. Now Russia's obliged to restart hostilities against Sweden having lost confidence in France, she cannot fail to see that her enemy is supported purely and solely by French subsidies, and that the `oppression of Russia' is the scheme whereby France may become mistress of the North, as the destruction of the House of Austria is to enslave the rest of Europe. Russia should now join with those powers opposing France's pernicious views. HM's resolution to defend the liberties of all Europe can leave Czarina no doubt of his readiness to join with her in any common measure. Your letter of 3 April laid before HM who orders you to stay in St Petersburg unless Czarina's stay is prolonged when you should repair to Moscow. Secret advices communicated to Prince Scerbatov by HM's order as he is minister in whom HM has particular confidence. Dated Whitehall, 27 April 1742.
