Description

Folio 9: Finch to Harrington. Saxon officer returns with all jewels entrusted to Lynar. Money or purchases made, yet to be returned. Travellers now at Riga, where they stay until Duke of Holstein arrives. Thursday after Easter proposed for coronation in Moscow. Prince Lewis still here. Crepi here and says that Diedron is en route from Stockholm. Privy Councillor, Nepluief ordered back from Ukraine not admitted to Czarina's presence. Czarina has low opinion of quarrelling Counsellor's and although using Bestuzev thinks equally lowly of him. Nobody in Russia would pass as a tolerably honest man in any other country. Without caution friendship of France will prove fatal to Russia. Duke of Birkenfeld desires diploma of estate in Livonia newly given to him yet hopes it will not be confirmed as he wishes to quit service and country there-after. Dated St Petersburg, 5 Jan 1742.
