Folio 8: Finch to Harrington. Have communicated to Count Osterman the substance of your letter, leaving out the clause in asterisks, so that he might, if not disposed to accept the article on which the exchange of Ratifications depended, allow me to have my audience of leave. His reply was that I could not go until my messenger returned with more favourable instructions. Further instructions were impossible after my letter received from you today, and that if conclusion not possible on this separate article the negotiation was entirely over. Forced unwillingly to stay till messenger returns. Glad only to try any means to continue negotiations. Dated St Petersburg, 25 Aug 1741.
