Description

Folio 138: Finch to Harrington. Count Osterman prevented from keeping yesterday's appointment but today have gone over the separate article with him without mention of the equipment. Explanation of why squadron could not be sent now and that appearance of English squadron in the Baltic would occasion a French one sailing here and a Danish one too. These three together would be superior to the two. Here I raised the French intrigues at Copenhagen of which he was aware and Osterman tried to pin it all on Finland. This might be true if there were no other unfavourable actions towards Russia. Negotiations could not be ended on ratification exchanged without correction of sixth clause of treaty. Osterman unable to see in separate article what applied if French squadron came into the Baltic first. My reply was that an English squadron coming first has always been requested by Russia. Negotiations can only succeed if England pledges to send fleet to Baltic if French do so. Dated St Petersburg, 21 July 1741.
