Description

Folio 120: Finch to Harrington. Translation of de Swarts' memoria and the answer of this court enclosed Impatient curiosity shown here to know what answer Rumpf received to a similar one presented to Sweden. Count Gyllenborg told him that Diet business had so occupied him that he had been unable to give it thought. People say that if Swedish Diet has not yet replied to the offer of mediation from such an important friend as States General then they possibly will only reply until war with Russia has been declared. Report that Diet resolved to transport to Finland 4000 horse and that bridge at North Tellil is to be repaired speedily for them to embark there. Merchant Keuman contracted to provide forage. Memorial presented to this court by Austrian minister and resident to claim immediate Russian fulfillment of promises to Austria. Count Lynar appears to have authority to support Austrian claims and Count Osteins letters to general Botta hint at this also. He suggests that I will know more from you soon. Osterman anxious to know HM's intentions on this, for he had heard that in Cabinet Council at Versailles a resolution had been taken for France to unmask and declare openly against Austria and that a fleet was arming at Brest designed for the Baltic. He asked whether hoped for English squadron was to be depended on and I answered that I could add no more than Scerbatov had told him of Duke of Newcastle's conversation. General Botta optimistic enough to persuade himself that despite expected rupture with Sweden, Russia will send help to queen of Hungary, provided my instructions from HM authorize corroboration. General Keith believed to be going to Vyborg to review and command 18,000 foot and 4000 Dragoons - which if needed will be reinforced by same number under command of Prince of Hesse-Homberg. 50,000 - 60,000 are so encamped as to be gathered together rapidly, in case the Swedes attack. Dated St Petersburg, 11 July 1741.
