Description

Folio 79: Harrington to Finch. HM is pleased to grant your request for recall owing to your ill-health. Duplicates of letters of revocation sent herewith, 3 with titles, one without. Sir Cyril Wich your successor. HM would have you stay to greet him if your health permits, but does not mean to tie you down if it does not. You have general information about HM's recent negotiation for reconciling the courts of Vienna and Berlin, which is important for Protestant religion, the Empire, liberties of Europe and House of Austria. Elector of Bavaria resolute in attacking Queen of Hungary, with subsidy from Spain and promise of 30,000 men from France. Also intended invasion by Spanish and Neapolitan forces of Austrian Dominions in Italy. HM determined to put an end to present unnatural war with King of Prussia who may be content with Duchy of Glogau including Guimbey and Swiebodzin which was proposed but neither accepted or rejected. Meantime HM had secret intelligence that King of Prussia had signed treaty with France and was persuaded that such important knowledge must convince Vienna to try and detach him from such an alliance. HM notified Queen of Hungary in hopes that Prussian King could be induced to prefer an accommodation with Lee. Robinson having dictated this to the Austrian ministers received from them the answer from Queen of Hungary. HM saw with surprise that that court would not yield anything in Silesia and offered vaguely some territory in Flanders or on the Rhine, and an unspecified sum of money. HM wishes you to inform Osterman and ask him to judge the difficulties he is in by this unaccountable behaviour of Vienna. Continue to cultivate support for House of Austria and confirm that HM has not yet yielded to repeated attempts by Austria to persuade him to begin hostilities against Prussia. HM has given by treaty £300,000, granted by Parliament to Queen of Hungary and has posted Danish and Hessian troops in pay of Great Britain, in such a way that it obliges the King of Prussia, all this time, to keep 27,000 men on HM's frontier preventing him driving the Austrian's out of Silesia. Dated Hanover, 5 July 1741.
