Folio 61: Finch to Harrington. Accounts about election in Courland. Exile of Biron family, regiments to be reviewed by Field Marshal Lacy and General Keith on the sides of the Perspective, a road projected by Peter the Great to Moscow but not completed. 20 battalions of Foot, equalling 64,000 men, 20,000 horse and garrison regiments of 5 at Riga, 3 at Reval 1 at Nauva, 5 here, 3 each at Kronstadt and Vyborg, 1 at Kexholm amounting to 25,000 men, as well as 3 regiments of foot guards and 1 of horse (nearly 10,000 more). Russians strong on land but not at sea. French Squadron making ready for the Baltic. Advice on this from Prince Cantemir, f.67. Suggested to Osterman possibility of having Russian minister at Hanover. Best suggestion is Bestuzev, now at Stockholm. Should be most agreeable person for HM Hope English Squadron will be detailed to Baltic, best contribution to settling differences. Osterman says France would receive Russia with open arms in preference to Sweden. Dated St Petersburg, 16 June 1741.
