Folio 44: Finch to Harrington. Count Osterman smilingly said he could not answer me about de la Chetardie's audience as previously I had been so vehement on the subject. More warmly I hoped the expedients proposed to the ambassador would be rejected by him and the delays in obtaining new letters from his court would stop all difficulties for this count and the foreign ministers. If de la Chetardie leaves here he may succeed St Severin at Stockholm. Osterman inquisitive whether our merchant ships had seen any French men-of-war. Reply about numbers and armaments. Osterman reported that Prince Cantemir had sent a list of ships and their guns and the names of their captains and from Cardinal Fleury's discourse doubted not they were destined for the Baltic. On the other hand I told Osterman that Botta had received from Wasner in Paris the Cardinal's assurance that there was no plans for that sea. The Prince of Hesse Hamburg went to Kronstadt. Talk of similar visit to fleet by Prince Generalissimo. Dated St Petersburg 9 June 1741.
