Folio 40: Finch to Harrington. Hope when post arrives tomorrow that news brought by Captain Laws that Admiral Vernon had taken Carthagina (Cartagena) can be confirmed and I can congratulate your lordship on this glorious success. Count Osterman when told informed the Grand Duchess and the Prince, who sent compliments in return showing mark of friendship for HM General Botta, Count Lynar and Bachoff all sent best wishes but from Mardefeld and Nolken I have heard nothing from de la Chetardie I expected nothing. I informed you some months ago that Bachoff wanted the negotiations on sound passports converted into a treaty and I wanted Russian minister at Copenhagen to unite with Titley to procure lower sound duties for several commodities produced by England and Russia. No effect due to dilatoriness, frequently encountered here. Today heard that Bachoff is pressing further. Mr. Shervis, secretary of the Cabinet told again how much the trade of both Russia and England could be prejudiced and that King of Denmark wished everything in perfect equity. Field Marshal Lacy has taken a house here, so I believe has General Keith. Dated St Petersburg 6 June 1741.
