Description

Folio 222: Finch to Harrington. No result heard of great council of war held at Field Marshal Lacy's house. A Dutch ship reports that she saw at a distance 6 Swedish men of war and met 6 others at Dagaroort. Vice Admiral's ship had 94 guns. Another Dutch ship met same squadron this side of Revel opposite Helsingfors and was questioned as to whether English squadron was coming into Baltic, and whether any men of war getting ready in Holland or Denmark. De la Chetardie plans to visit Kronstadt, as do Botta, Wilczek and I, but if he does not join our party all we will miss is his complaints at want of honours, for he never quits being ambassador. Osterman requested billet as Lynar has sent to confirm that I had an audience with Prince Generalissimo after delivery of HM's answer on notification of Czar's accession. De la Chetardie begins to yield a little, insinuating that, if other ministers did, he would have less difficulty in conforming to their example. Sailors at Kronstadt subject to sickness and scurvy. General Keith may command land forces aboard who pull at the war, a post of honour, when at sea. Justitium, or assembly of nobles, indicated for next month in Courland for new election, presumably in favour of third prince of Brunswick Wolfembuttel. Count de Saxe has had agent there, his former page Dieskau, now an officer in his regiment, who served a campaign under Munnich, to revive his pretensions to the duchy. Dieskau brought letters from Cardinal Fleury and is lodging with de la Chetardie. Bestuzev released and transported to small estate, from whose bounds he is not to pass. Procureur General Prince Trubetskoi, thought to be in disgrace when sent to Riga at fall of regent, now returned in former employment. Intrigues here in favour of Princess Elizabeth. Dated St Petersburg 3 June 1741.
