Description

Folio 108: Finch to Harrington. Regent applies himself with assiduity to business, assisting most mornings at the Cabinet, and he laid the keel of a ship of 66 guns at the Admiralty this week. He has called for distinct accounts of the army, fleet and revenues so that he knows the condition of each at the beginning of his regency. 30,000 recruits ordered to complete the army. Sumptuary law, similar to example of Sweden and Denmark, is being prepared, forbidding use of gold and silver in wearing apparel. Exchange of Turkish ambassadors was made last month. When Persian ambassador died, 6 of the chief persons wanted to be separate or joint ambassadors. General Apraxin had orders to conduct only one. 3,000 persons in train; most had neither shoes nor stockings. Colonel Neuber arrived at Mitau on way here from Warsaw. Count Lynar here soon. Princess Anne and regent appear on good terms at frequent meetings. Prince of Bevern stays in princess's apartment after attempted rebellion with 8 accomplices, 3 of which are the court's coachman, an apprentice and a barber now released. The prince's adjutant, Jacobleff, and princess Anne's secretary still in prison. Worst crime is betraying to princess the secrets of the succession and regency whilst under deliberation. Dated St Petersburg 8 Nov 1740.
