Description

Folio 253: Rondeau to Harrington. Count Osterman twice emphasized the Czarina's friendship with HM and stated that delay of translation of project of treaty should not make for impatience. Account of action of Munnich and several thousand Turks and Tartars near Chotczin, many of whom were repulsed with great loss. Spirits of Russian court raised, previously low because of ill-success of general Wallis. Another memorandum presented by Bachoff, as Denmark dissatisfied with answer to first, mentioned in f.207. This could be settled in England by merchants of the Russia Company with mutual satisfaction, for it is said the fair trader gets little or nothing by cheating the Danish king. At rumour that Bestuzev might be in danger, in revenge for Sinclair's murder, the Czarina told Nolcken to acquaint the Swedish court not to allow anything to befall Bestuzev, as the whole world knew she had no hand in the affair and would resent anything happening to cause his death. News that Wallis has beaten 25,000 - 30,000 Turks at Panczova. Villeneuve, the French ambassador, is at Nissa. HM's answer to Czarina's letter of notification will be delivered tomorrow at Peterhof. Dated StPetersburg, 11 Aug 1739.
