Description

Folio 178: Rondeau to Harrington. Confidential report from duke of Courland that Czarina's envoy at Congress has declared to the Porte that matters could be adjusted if she keeps everything taken from the Turks during the present war, i.e. town and district of Okzakow, Azov and all lands between the Don and Dnieper to the Perekop. Russia proposes that Moldavia and Valachia should become an independent principality, serving as barrier between Russians, Germans, Poles and Turks. Imperial ministers protest against this last as they wish the Turks to give Bosnia, Moldavia and Valachia and the towns of Vidin and Nissa to the Emperor. Duke of Courland thinks Vienna's demands unreasonable but that those of Czarina are reasonable, as Russians are demanding only Okzakow which cost them enought for them to keep. Peace will be concluded this year, as Russia and Vienna will be sorely afflicted by want of money, which might encourage French and Spanish to raise new troubles bringing all Europe into war. Although HM, States General and Saxon Minister at Vienna have had communication of his treaty with France from the Emperor, Russia has not. Emperor in danger of losing this court's regard. Dated St Petersburg 3 Sept 1737.
