Description

Folio 170: Rondeau to Harrington. Mecklenburg secretary has returned from France with new proposals for Czarina not to oppose king Stanislaus. France will guarantee all Russian territories now possessed and any conquered during troubles in the North. Duke of Mecklenburg desires Russian troops, at the end of the Danzig affair, to drive out Hanoverian and Holstein troops from Mecklenburg. This Czarina refused. She has no guarantee from France, no desires for new conquests, and would oppose Stanislaus with all her power, and would send no troops to Mecklenburg. Count Biron displeased with king Augustus in Poland for not helping the Russians. Hochholzer said that he had been informed by Count Osterman of new French proposals and that he hoped Czarina would not listen to them. Baron Mardefeld trying to prevent Russia from signing our treaty of commerce as it will stop Prussian sales of soldiers cloth. French fleet in the Road of Danzig and men landed at fort of Wechselmunde re-embarked for lack of space in the fort. Munnich communicated his strength plus 5,000-6,000 extra Russians from Warsaw and said 10,000-12,000 French attacking would not make him uneasy. Death of Stanislaus reported, but not confirmed. Dated St Petersburg 18 May 1734.
