Folio 54: Harrington to Forbes and Rondeau. Letter of revocation for Forbes and letter from HM to Czarina notifying marriage of his daughter to prince of Orange are on a ship en route for Riga. Treaty of commerce appears hopeful despite delaying tactics of Count Osterman in wanting to bring about a treaty of alliance at the same time. Prince Cantemir has handed in here a project of a defensive alliance and a separate and secret article, copies of which are enclosed. No encouragement from HM on this. Continue to reason as before with Russian ministers, for if they delay, our merchants will search for other outlets of commerce and try cultivating our colonies and importing from America.Russia would lose her trade with England which is costly to us and beneficial to them. Disabusing the Swedish ministers of any negotiations was correct. Our enemies tried to make capital with Sweden, but their minds are now quieted. Extract of disptaches from Berlin enclosed, regarding Baron Mardefeld's `mysterious ramble'. On leaving St Petersburg Forbes is to leave for Rondeau his original instructions or attested copies of them and also cyphers. Dated Whitehall, 29 Mar 1733/4.
