Description

Folio 83: Rondeau to Harrington. Czarina's views on election in Poland. Hopes that Great Britain will order Minister in Warsaw to act in concert with Count Löwenwolde and Emperor's minister. Le Fort says that Elector of Saxony hopes Czarina will assist him to succeed his father resolving to affirm strict amity with Czarina, King of England and Emperor. Count Biron informed him in great confidence that the Czarina would favour the Elector of Saxony being chosen King of Poland provided England and Vienna agreed. This situation would not be favoured by Berlin, but Prussian King cannot be depended upon. All this demands secrecy here; including with Count Osterman a great friend to Berlin. Duke Ferdinand of Courland not expected to live long and Czarina wishes to make an agreement with Elector of Saxony if he succeeds to Poland, not to oppose free election of Courlanders on Duke's death. Preservation of Protestant religion in Courland will prevent division of country into Palatinates and unification with Poland. Mr Magnan has declared to Field Marshal Munnich that his master the King of France is resolved to follow his grandfather King Louis XIV and maintain the Poles in their ancient liberties, by putting King Stanislaus on Poland's throne Magnan spoke to Count Osterman as well, but he could not have an interview with the Great Chancellor Biron. Major General Bismar is promised to Miss Traydon, sister to Countess of Biron. Munnich disappointed. He wanted his son to marry her. Dated St Petersburg, 7 Apr 1733.
