Folio 60: Rondeau to Townshend. Westphal gave me the scheme of a treaty of salutation, enclosed, negotiated with Baron Osterman. Promise given that it would not be shown to the Swedish Ministry in London, nor in the Russian Chancery, reason being not to inform Sweden before it is concluded. Osterman has intimated that he thinks me a strange person as I have never been to see him, and on being told that my absence must only be because of thinking myself unimportant, he says he will be glad of my visit. Await instructions on how to conduct myself when at this favourable juncture. Dated Moscow, 30 Mar 1730.
