Folio 48: Rondeau to Townshend. Order of St. Catherine given by Czarina to daughter of duchess of Mecklenburg. Now looked on as heir presumptive. Male line of Peter I extinct, so reversion to female line of Czar Ivan. Mardefeld confessed to me that in event of war he thought Vienna in no condition to fight against all allies of Seville, but thought that if Emperor did not accede and found he should lose something in Italy, he would rather give towns in Flanders to France to encourage her neutrality. This would prove more detrimental to the English and Dutch than anything done in Italy to him. This is wrong; France would do better to hinder the Emperor from becoming more powerful in Italy. If Russians do not make good their compacts with the Emperor, all Europe will despise them saying it is their domestic quarrels which hinder them. Upheaval at court. With new approach Osterman may find England better friends to Russia than ever the Emperor has been. Imprudent sending of 30,000 men, might cause the allies of Seville to aid Sweden in recovering the provinces she lost in the last war. Danes, being sorry to see Swedes more powerful than themselves, would nevertheless do nothing to disoblige HM, in case in the long-run duke of Holstein might be permitted to ask them for the return of duchy of Sleswig. If duke of Holstein should ever gain the crown of Sweden, Osterman says that he would be required to give up his other dominions to his cousin, the bishop of Lubeck. Dated Moscow, 6 Mar 1729.
