Description

Folio 15: Rondeau to Townshend. Proposal by Dolgorukov to marry his daughter to Czar on his death bed quashed by Osterman who said it necessary to think of a successor most likely to please the people. Old Empress refused crown on account of her age. Articles being drawn up to limit powers of the new Empress which she must sign or they choose another - three are gone to Mitau to acquaint the duchess of her election and her quick arrival here desired, so that any Cabals against her may be hindered. Holstein party and Mecklenburg duchess certainly no longer much in favour. HM's allies can assume that 30,000 men promised by treaty of 1726 cannot be expected by Emperor if he does not accede to the Treaty of Seville. Surprise at welcome given ambassador from Prince Tamas considering this court only recently made formal peace treaty with Sultan Eschereff. Hope soon to send account of expected alterations caused by death of Czar. Our nation loved by present Czarina, therefore little will turn to our disadvantage. Dated Moscow, 19 Jan 1729.
