Description

Folio 5: Rondeau to Townshend. Treaty of Seville has established as good relations between duke of Liria and me as he previously had with Count Wratislaw. Interesting long discourse with the duke on what should be done by Venice, Genoa and Italian princes. Doubtful if they would supply money to increase power of Emperor. If Baron Osterman were the only minister that it depended on the Czar could not be detached from the Emperor and the baron is devoted to Vienna and not bribable. Other ministers let him do all and will until they see advantages to themselves. Russians hate germans and he thinks if it is of interest for them to be allied to England, small bribes may accomplish it and break the union with Vienna, reestablishing harmony with England and make Russia do blindly whatever pleases Great Britain. A treaty between Russia and England while it exists, must hinder the Turks from attacking Russia, this being principal point on which champions of Vienna sell alliance with Emperor to Russia. Dated Moscow, 12 Jan 1729.
