Folio 242: Jefferyes to Craggs. Latest account from Samland is enclosed. Osterman has returned from Sweden with answers obviously designed to divert and baffle the Czar. The Czar is angry at being disappointed in hopes of peace and has ordered more severe hostilities. The season being late he will winter his men of war here and the galleys and transports at Abo and Helsingfors. The army will be quartered in Finland. 150,000 tons of meal are ordered while the sea and rivers remain open. Uncertain whether the Czar will attack Sweden during the winter if the Gulf of Bothnia freezes sufficiently hard or renew the invasion in the spring. Slippenbach, Privy Counsellor and Chamberlain to the king of Prussia, is here and it is thought, to give account to the Czar of Whitworth's negotiations at Berlin. He is in no apparent hurry to proceed to St.Petersburg and no urgent calls are made for his appearance. Dated Revel, 20 Aug 1719.
