Description

Folio 208: Jefferyes to Craggs. The Czar, having inspected everything here, left on 22nd, but next evening was still lying in mouth of harbour. Masters and mates of both English and Dutch prizes are obliged to follow on the supposition that, having traded with Sweden, they will know the coasts well. The common sailors are sent to St.Petersburg and allowed 6 pence a day subsistance. The Czar's news from Aland is kept completely secret although causing him ill-humour. News from Sweden of preparations for his arrival. No further discovery of the Czar's plan, but everything points to an invasion of Sweden, and forcing a peace. Knowing of preparations in Sweden, but not knowing the part Britain will play, makes some think he will postpone his plans. The Czar is apprehensive of our fleet; but why, unless he thinks he deserves some ill-treatment from HM He says recently that Sir John Norris not one of his friends, should have come from Copenhagen to St.Petersburg but did not as he would rather deal with the Czar in any manner but an amicable one. The Czar plans a mole at Rogerwyk, seven German miles from here, to make a harbour. To navigate from Kronslot to Revel he must have 2 winds to bring him into harbour; from Kronslot to Rogerwyk only one. Rogerwyk is open long in autumn and free sooner of ice in spring, which is important to the Czar. Dated Revel, 25 June 1719.
